New York- Day One

So we left Wilmington and tried to catch the flight to NYC.  John, Joshua, Caroline, and Grace were able to get on the first flight.  Kim, Hannah, Benjamin and myself were not so lucky.  We waited and waited for a delayed flight only to find out that we wouldn't get on it.   Finally at the end of the day we boarded a flight for Boston.  We arrived at Boston around 1:00 in the morning.  We would need to be back at the airport by 5:30 or 6:00 so we decided it was not worth the time, effort, or money to stay in a hotel for only 3 or 4 hours.  So we went looking for a 'comfy' place to sleep.  We ended up sleeping on benches in the baggage area.  Benjamin slept well in the stroller, but I can't say much about myself.  I worried the entire time about someone taking my purse or worse my child.

Early the next morning we left for NYC.  We arrived in NYC a few hours earlier where we met up with John and the rest of the kids, who had spent the night at a friends apartment in the city.  We made our way up to our apartment that we rented for the week.  It was totally the way to go.  We used VRBO and found a one bedroom apartment for much less than we would have paid for a hotel room in the city.  It had two pull out beds in the family room and a queen size bed in the bedroom.   It was nice to have a kitchen and extra space, with all of us we would have needed two hotel rooms so we really saved a ton of money.  The location was farther out and I would describe the apartment as similar to college housing, nothing fancy but adequate.  Since we had lived in college housing in the city before we were comfortable not being in the center of the city.

After we got settled we headed out for dinner and the Empire State Building.  Along the way we came across a police barcade.  Apparently a suspect was running from police and they shot him.  Some in our group became very interested.  John was right their in the middle listening to the eyewitness accounts.

While John was busy investigating with the police.  We took the opportunity to take some pictures.

We finally got on our way again.  We timed it well and got to the top of the Empire State Building right before sunset.  The last time we were there was mine and John's first anniversary.  It was fun to take the kids there.  It was packed but we got to see city at sunset as all of the lights started to turn on, it was beautiful.  The Empire State Building often uses lights to celebrate different events, red, white and blue for the 4th of July, red and green for Christmas.  They were celebrating the closing ceremonies of the Olympics with the Olympic colors of red, green, white and blue.

By the time we got down it was dark and the city was aglow.

We walked back through Times Square.  It is fun to walk through Times Square at night.  It is truly a city that never sleeps.

I love this family of mine.
