The Cabin

My family owns a cabin.  Actually it was my grandparents cabin, but they have both passed away so now the 6 sibblings own the cabin and most of their children use the cabin.  Anyways, I am not sure exactly when the cabin was built, sometime in the 1950's and it has barely been updated since then.  The kitchen is all original, flooring, stove, sink, cabinents, countertop, all totally retro. White metal cabinents and silver metal countertops.

The carpet as far back as I can remember has been the same, but it still looks new, amazing how durable they used to make things.  The furniture has been added to so there is an eclectic group of couches and chairs from the 50's through the 80's.  Nothing matches including the cups and plates.  The cups range from cute little pink tea cups to metal tumblers.  Although there is now a set of matching plates, my mother donated her set of 'everyday' from her wedding in 1971; they are green.  There is nothing beautiful or fancy about this place but I LOVE it.

We can leave out house and be to 'the cabin' in 20 minutes.  Which means we can go up for dinner and be back in time for bed.  It has the most gorgeous view out the back and is totally nestled in the mountianside.

I have many happy memories of spending time at the cabin.  However, I only have one memory of everyone (aunts, uncles, and cousins) being there at the same time.  Ok, maybe two, or it may be from the same trip.  I remember collecting rocks and helping to build the rock retaining wall.  My grandparents were HARD workers.  My grandpa was full German and he worked and expected the grandchildren to work.  I couldn't have been older than 10 but I remember all of the grandchildren scouring the mountain side looking for the 'right sized rocks'  to carry back down while my grandpa insturcted the fathers were to place them.  The retaining wall is still there doing it's job.  I also remember sleeping overnight once (my only memory of sleeping over, my parents used the cabin quite a bit, but never for sleeping, my mom didn't like it).  I slept in a bed with my older cousins Susan and Heidi.  There was a terrible thunder and lightning storm and I remember laying there scared to death.

Now I am an adult and I love to take my children to the cabin.  You can run around outside and enjoy the beautiful clean mountain air.
There is still a 'boys' loft and a 'girls' loft.  I don't mind sleeping at the cabin so we try and stay overnight once a year.  Many families use the cabin so that is about all we can fit in. Although, I try and find non-peak times when we can go up and enjoy a few hours during the week.  I hope my kids are loving the cabin and sucking in the same great memories that I have.
Playing 'Big Budda' with my cousin and their kids.  Notice the great furniture and awesome carpet.
Another set of cousins, enjoying Purple Turtle shakes.

Love this picture.  It was so sweet to watch Ellie help Joshua take off is shoes.

This was HUGE!!!
Joshua had not gone within 15 feet of the 4-wheeler, so when he finally said he wanted to get on, he jumped up to first in line.
