Kid's Songs

So everyone in our family has a special song. It started with Hannah, well actually it started with Johnny. Yes, for those of you who know him as John he grew up as Johnny so people would often sing Johnny Be Good to him.

On our wedding day it rained when we came out of the temple and as we drove to the restaurant to meet our wedding party Clint Black's song Like The Rain came on, so that became OUR song.

Hannah was born in New York City and so her song became Frank Sinatra's New York New York. John and I were on vacation in Newport, RI when I was about 8 months pregnant. We were eating on the water front when an outdoor band played Neil Diamonds Sweet Caroline. We had been considering the name Caroline so that sealed the deal.

Grace was a little bit harder. We named her without any song in mind. She was about 5 months old when we were eating dinner with my cousins and we mentioned that we needed to find a 'song' for Grace. We hadn't been able to find anything that had any special meaning. My cousin Collin mentioned a song named Gracie by Ben Folds. I listened to it and it fit, so it became Grace's song, we also call her Gracie Girl now.

So that brings us to Joshua. We didn't know what kind of song we would come up with for a boy. We live in Arizona and "I bought some ocean front property in Arizona" didn't fit. We found a real twangy country song by Dolly Parton named Joshua, but that was a big no. So last year as John and I sat watching the Championship College Basketball game my contractions started, 10 days early which had never happened. Joshua was born the next morning so his song became One Shining Moment by David Barret sung by Luther Vandross (my favorite part of March Madness). I tell John he can just watch that 3 minutes of highlights and save himself hours of watching basketball, but he doesn't get it.

Our kids love their songs. We play them all the time, but always on birthdays when they wake-up and before we sing Happy Birthday. When Caroline was in pre-k she came home from school one day and asked incredulously, "My teacher started singing my song to me. How does she know it?" It is amazing because each of their songs fits their personalities perfectly. Too early to tell about Josh, but if John gets his way it will fit his personality as well. You listen and tell me if you agree. Playlist is at the bottom of the blog.

A little side note, Hannah was born in NYC and the Yankees play New York New York at every home ball game. Caroline was born in Connecticut and the Boston Red Socks (a favorite of New Englanders) play Sweet Caroline at every game.
